God of God, Light of Light
Lo, He abhors not the Virgin’s womb
Very God
Begotten, not created
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord!
Day 6…
‘O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!…’, or so the first line of this most famous of Carols goes.
Although this line is known by many, how many of us actually measure up as being ‘faithful, joyful, or triumphant’?
Speaking for myself, I fail at that tape measurement.
Thankfully, the good news of Christ’s birth is for all, not those that measure up. Actually, it’s particularly good news for those of us who don’t. This opening line is not a ‘black-tie-only’ invitation, but the riches that Christ has come to bring to us all. It’s God’s faithfulness we celebrate; it’s the light and life that Jesus brings which stimulates joy; it’s the Divine’s triumphant victory over death, Satan and sin that is cause for adoration.
So come, whoever you are.
As @iansimkins reworded it:
O come all ye faithless
troubled and defeated
O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem
O come all ye doubters, cynics and you skeptics…
O come, with all your grieving
O come, with all your sorrow
O come, let us adore him
He’s still Christ the Lord
O sing brokenhearted,
sing with painful groaning,
O come ye, o come ye in joy or in grief
O come and surrender, all your ceaseless striving…
He’s with us in our heartache,
He’s with us in the valleys,
He’s with us in the waiting,
He’s Christ the Lord’
